Cool Find: The Sorensen House

November 2015 UPDATE. This home has come back to the market, stay tuned for additional information!

Some of my favorite MCM homes were created in the 60’s. The Sorensen House is a great example of 1960’s mid-century modern architecture.

It recently came on the market…for the first time ever…and was under contract in less than 3 days. This one owner home in Applewood (Wheat Ridge) was in virtually original condition. I didn’t expect the home to be for sale long, so I did my best to capture what I could in pictures and video. I apologize for the amateur quality rush job.

The house was designed by Architect James Ream with the help of George Hoover. While Ream only practiced in Denver from 1959 to 1965, he left us with some outstanding residential and commercial buildings. Ream and Hoover both trained/worked with William Muchow…notably Ream as lead designer for the now lost Currigan Hall and Hoover as lead designer for the Denver Center for Performing Arts.

There is a deck at each corner of the house. By using strategically placed benches and planters, the architect was able to avoid railings. The windows were measured to the owner’s eyeline providing views, light and privacy negating the need for drapes or blinds. This was one of the earliest homes built on the plateau, it had amazing 360 degree views.

While globe lights are common, I have never seen them incorporated with the skylights and other ceiling recesses as they are here. The sliding glass doors are designed to disappear inside the wall when opened.

You may be surprised to know that this 4 bd/3.5 ba home with in ground pool sold for a mere $395K.

5280mod An Original 1957 Find in Applewood

Thanks to my brother-in-law for giving me a heads up on this gem in Applewood!

Built in 1957, from what I can gather, this home has only had 2 owners and is in remarkable original condition (other than the robin’s egg blue paint that has been recently sprayed on almost every exterior surface) The second owners purchased the home in 1967 and (I’m assuming) added the carpet.

This deck railing detail gets lost in the sea of blue.

Main bathroom with chrome “hideaway” toothbrush/glass holder.

Main entrance – planter with metal rods. The bricks appear to continue under the gold “sculptured” carpet in the living/dining areas.
The divider seems to have been turned into a display case w/ a gold lamé backing.
This is a raised ranch with a garden level basement. As you can see in the exterior photo, both levels have a wall of glass.
Master Bedroom – nice light fixture and original hardware on the closets. (Must love pink)
Master Bath
Unfortunate placement of t.v. cable.
Notice the controls for the cooktop mounted on the back wall. That rectangular shape you can barely see on the counter to the left is a built in blender motor.
Dining room.
Dining Room side of the upstairs pass-through fireplace.
Bar/kitchenette in the basement.
Wallpaper in the Bar.
View of the family room (lower level) from the bar. This is another pass-through fireplace.
This home was recently purchased by an architect and his family.

SPECIAL EDITION – 5280mod Another West Denver Neighborhood (cont’d)

A home came on the market in the neighborhood I have highlighted in my last two posts.

My husband and I went to see it this weekend and the home definitely deserves its very own post.

This home was built in 1962 and has only had two owners. The second owners (who are now selling) purchased the home in 1981 and opted to keep the home original. There are outstanding original light fixtures among other things.

While we have an oversaturated housing market in the metro area, this home was on the market a mere 16 days before it went under contract. These homes certainly have a market all their own.

Enjoy!

That rectangular “hole” in the wall is an indoor gas grill with a hood that vents to the outside.

5280mod Another West Denver Neighborhood

Applejack sign Wheat Ridge

Today’s Wheat Ridge neighborhood has a lot of great homes, so this post will be in at least 3 parts.
As with the Lakewood neighborhood I previously talked about, this neighborhood was built prior to the City of Wheat Ridge’s incorporation. As a result, there are almost no sidewalks giving the area a great rural feeling. The large lots and incredible views make a lot of these homes even more spectacular.
I’m just posting photos I’ve taken here, but I do have additional information on each. Contact me if you’re interested or have questions in general: info@5280mod.com
Enjoy!
